A phrase that has become more popular over the last couple of years, self-care is any activity that we do deliberately in order to take care of our mental, emotional, and physical health. It’s something can be quite simple, but very much overlooked.
We know that self-care can improve our mood, reduce anxiety and allow us to take time out of our busy schedules.
If you ask most people what self care means to them, you’ll get a wide variety of different answers – for some people it’s as simple as sitting down with a nice cup of tea, for others it can be taking yourself off for an afternoon at the spa. Whatever your passion, there’s a way for you to get some rest and relaxation…. you just have to find it!
For me it depends on what mood I’m in, as to what will make me feel more relaxed:
• cooking
• listening to music
• exercising
• having a hot shower (usually washing my hair!)
• relaxing with a book
• going for a walk
It also depends how much time I have available too…. no point in trying to cook a nice dinner for myself if I only have a spare 5 minutes!
Lives and routines have changed over the past few months, and levels of stress and anxiety have increased in some people, making self-care more important than ever.
Think about things that you enjoy doing, and things that make you happy. Now think about how you can adapt them (if you need to!) to fit into your lifestyle and schedule.
Some people can misinterpret self-care as being selfish, but this isn’t a true representation of what it means. Indulging in self-care can give you a boost of motivation, self-confidence and productivity, meaning you’re reinvigorated and refreshed… and everyone around you can benefit from that!
